Four very common forms of silent flirtation are carried on with the handkerchief, the fan, rings, and postage stamps. The handkerchief flirtation is probably the oldest, except in China, where the fan is almost made to talk.
Fan
If a gentleman, on picking up a lady's fan, bouquet or any trinket,- he is offering to her. He should present it with his left hand,- he means to convey an expression of his regard to her; and if she would accept it,-she must receive it with her left hand.
But if she intends to reject it she should receive it with her right hand.
